By default, iOS devices capture photos in the high-efficiency HEIF format to reduce file size. However, most of the non-Apple products cannot read these files. When you want to read HEIC photos on Windows, Android, or other platforms, you need to convert HEIC to JPG or other more compatible formats.
In this article, I will show you three ways to convert HEIC to a more compatible format. You can convert it right on your iPhone or iPad before transferring.
Save in JPG instead of HEIC
If you have enough storage space on your iPhone or iPad, you can also use the most compatible format, JPEG, AKA JPG. To do that, just head over to Settings > Camera > Formats and select Most Compatible in there. Apple also allows you to convert image format with built-in app Shortcuts. You can get started with Shortcuts app and convert any image.
Convert HEIC to JPG or Another on iPhone or Mac
You don’t need to download anything to convert HEIC to JPG on iPhone or iPad if you are using iOS 13 or later versions. You can simply use the Shortcuts app, which is a stock app since iOS 13. What you need to do is just open this link in Safari to download the Photo Converter shortcut (optimized for iOS 16).
If you haven’t used the Shortcuts app before, you may find that you cannot add Unstrusted shortcuts. If that’s your case, just create a new shortcut by dragging any action in there and running it once. After that go to Settings > Shortcuts and toggle the option to Allow Untrusted Shortcuts.
Once you get the shortcut, just run the shortcut and then you can select a photo to convert. Then you can select the format among JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, BMP, PDF, HEIF, etc. WEBP is also supported as an image source. Besides, you can change the image quality or remove metadata from the photo. Since Shortcuts app is also available on macOS Monetery, you can also use this shortcut to convert HEIC to JPG or other formats on Mac.
Convert HEIC to JPG Online
No matter what device you use, you can always use free online tools to convert HEIC images to JPG. For me, I prefer this one. Once you get to the web page, you can simply drag the HEIC images and then start to convert.
It allows you to convert up to 50 images all at once. When complete, you can download all images as JPG on your PC or mobile device. The website is very clean without any ads, so you don’t need to worry about clicking on irrelevant links.
Convert HEIC to JPG on Windows
For Windows PC, you can use the free app HEIC to JPEG, which is available in Microsoft Store. Once installed on your Windows 10/11 PC, you can drag and drop images to this app. It will convert all images to JPG locally, so it’s fast and secure.
