You can easily extract audio from video on iPhone or iPad without downloading additional apps. In this post, I will show you 3 methods to convert any video to audio. If you want to extract audio from YouTube videos, you can refer to this post.
Extract Audio from Video Shortcut
The simplest way would be using the Shortcuts app, a stock app for iOS automation. There are hundreds of actions for you to choose from for your custom task. You may not know how to use it. I will show you how to create a shortcut for extracting audio from video step by step.
Get the Extract Audio Shortcut
If you don’t want to make it yourself, you can click this link to get my shortcut for separating audio from video. You can run it from Share Sheet or within the Shortcuts app. When it detects no shortcut input, you can select a video from your Photo Libary.
You can select multiple videos and convert them to audio all at once. I have also enabled Quick Actions, so you can also use this shortcut on your Mac. If you want to explore more about shortcuts, you can check out our full collection of shortcuts. By the way, It was made on iOS 17.
Make the Shortcut Step by Step
The above shortcut should also work on older versions of iOS. If it does not, you can follow the guide below to make one yourself.
Step 1. Open the Shortcuts app. If you accidentally deleted it, you can always download it from the App Store.
Step 2. Click the “+” icon to create a new shortcut.
Step 3. Type “select photos” in the search bar and drag the Select Photos action onto the shortcut. Tap on the action to include Videos only.
Step 4. Then add the Encode Media action.
Step 5. Tap on the Encode Media action to see more options. From there, toggle on Audio Only. The default format is M4A, and you can change it to AIFF.
Step 6. Add a Save File action to save the audio extracted from the video.
Now, you can tap the “play” icon to run this shortcut and select one video from your Photos app to make the audio-only version. Of course, you can also make this shortcut available in Share Sheet, so you can rip audio from videos in another app rather than Photos.
You can refer to the video above to create the shortcut for the Share Sheet. For advanced users, you can add a Repeat action to rip audio from multiple videos in one go. If you are interested in creating more custom shortcuts, this post will help you get started with Shortcuts fast.
Convert Video to MP3 Online
Since iOS 13, Safari for iOS is capable of downloading files, so you can also use free online tools to extract audio from any video on your iPhone. You can select a video from Files app or Photo Library.
If you try a Google search, you can find many online tools for this. I have selected one that is mobile optimized for you. You just go to this Online Audio Extractor page, upload your video, and download the audio file once the conversion is complete.
If you like how it works, you can also add this to your Home screen for quick access.
If your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 12 or even older versions, you can use the Documents app by Readdle, which is free in the App Store. The app provides a web browser that allows you to download files on iPhone.
Extract Audio with Documents App
Speaking of the Documents app, you can also use it to extract audio from video directly. The Documents app is quite powerful. Generally, it allows you to manage and organize all your media documents.
Besides, you can play videos, read pdf, listen to music, and even access network shared folder on iPhone with this app. Let me show you how to use Documents to extract audio step by step.
Step 1. Open your Documents app and play the video that you want to convert to audio within the app.
Step 2. On the video playback scream, tap the “Video Actions” icon at the top right corner
Step 3. On the pop-up screen, select the “Extract audio” option and then select the “Extract mp3 file” option.
Step 4. When it is complete, you will see the option “Show in my files”. You can just tap on it to access your audio.
Within the Documents app, you can access all videos from the Photos app and Files app. You can also share videos from other apps to Documents and then use this method to convert video to MP3 on iPhone or iPad.
