If you have not used the Shortcuts app as an iOS user, you have missed a lot. Shortcuts is a stock app for automation, which was first introduced in iOS 12. With more than 400 actions to customize, users have created many amazing shortcuts to ease your life.

With iOS Shortcuts Automation, it is even more fun to trigger a shortcut. However, there is a little learning curve to being able to create your own shortcuts, but you can use the premade shortcuts created by others. In this article, I will show a few really useful shortcuts.

How to import shortcuts for the first time

When you launch the Shortcuts app, you will have no shortcuts. You can tap the Gallery tab at the bottom right where there are premade shortcuts from Apple Team. Here in this post, we will talk about adding shortcuts from sources outside the Gallery.

Apple considers these shared shortcuts “untrusted” and you must allow untrusted shortcuts in Settings to import them. If you have never run a shortcut, you will probably see the option Allow Untrusted Shortcuts greyed out. In that case, you can follow the steps below to import shortcuts.

Step 1. Open the Shortcuts app and create a shortcut. You can add any action in there.

Step 2. Run any shortcut.

Step 3. Go to Settings > Shortcuts and turn on Allow Untrusted Shortcuts.

You can also refer to the video below to see how to allow untrusted shortcuts.

My top 10 favorite shortcuts

For me, these 10 shortcuts are must-haves. You can add any shared shortcut below with the iCloud link based on your needs.

Chrunos Multi Downloader

If you like to use Shortcuts app to download videos or music, you will like this shortcut. It can download videos from YouTube, Twitch, Reddit, Streamable, and many more. What’s more, you can use it to download music from Spotify, SoundCloud, Tidal, Deezer, etc.

Besides, you can check our ultimate downloader shortcuts collection.

Apple Frames

This shortcut allows you to add a variety of frames to your screenshots. You will be initially offered to download a small set of frames: all the sizes and colors of iPhone 14, and the iPad Pro 12.9″. If you need iPhone 15 Frames, you can have this one.

You can also add your own frames without the need to edit the shortcut. All you need to do is copy your frames to the Shortcuts/Screenshot Frames/ folder in your iCloud Drive, and run the shortcut to select the “Scan frames folder” option in the Configuration menu.

The shortcut can rotate the frames so you can easily have portrait and landscape frames based on the image you choose.

YouTube PIP

If YouTube Picture in Picture mode is not available on your iOS device, you can use this YouTube PIP shortcut. It allows you to open YouTube videos directly in picture-in-picture from without YouTube Red subscription.

You can control the video playback speed, quickly jump forward or backward in video. To use this shortcut, you can copy the YouTube URL to run the shortcut or run it from share sheet.

Reverse Image Search

This Reverse Image Search shortcut makes it easy to search for anything related to an image instead of keywords. You can run this shortcut to select the image or go to Photos app to select a photo and run this shortcut from Share Sheet.

Icon Themer

If you want to create custom home screen icons, previously, you can create a shortcut to launch the app and add the shortcut to the home screen. The problem is that the themed icons open the Shortcuts app before launching the actual app.

Luckily, in iOS 14, Apple introduced the ability to create profiles that launch apps without a redirect (except for system apps). This shortcut Icon Themer is to help you use this feature. With this shortcut, you can create a single profile for all your icons instead of tons of shortcuts.

Moreover, you can import themes instead of having to choose the icon manually for each app. You can also share the created profiles so that you can install them again later or share them with friends.

Seamless clipboard history

As its name suggested, this is a shortcut to help you manage your clipboard, but it is the best one that I have tried. This consists of two shortcuts “Save to Clips” and “Get Clips“. You can run Get CLips to copy multiple items to clipboard to paste later.

Meme Generator

Memes bring us joy. This shortcut is to help you create amazing memes. You can upload your own images or use its templates. Please note that this Shortcut temporarily adds your custom image to your Dropbox and sends the public link to that image to https://memegen.link. The image will then be removed from your Dropbox.

In iOS 15, the Create Dropbox Folder is no longer available, so you should manually create a folder /Temp/Memes in Dropbox. This is only required when you Select Image from Library.

Ultimate Spotify shortcut

If I remember correctly, you can ask Siri to play Spotify music since iOS 13. This shortcut allows you to do more than just play on Spotify. By implementing Spotify API, this shortcut can do pretty everything on Spotify.

Thanks to this shortcut, I was able to make some of my shortcuts related to Spotify much easier.

Combine Images

This shortcut is quite simple, but I use it very often. You can run it directly to choose photos or run it from Share Sheet on selected images. You can combine images vertically, horizontally, or in a grid. It will give you a quick preview and then you can decide to save the combined image or try it again.

Image Recognition

This is quite helpful for the blind. You can take a picture or run it on your existing images. It is not perfect to identify any object though.

Shortcuts that I made

Change Image Background

If you are not content with the background of a photo you took, you can easily remove its background and select another photo as the image background. You don’t have to pay for photo editing apps to do this kind of thing.

I use a free API key in the shortcut. In case it runs out of quota, you’d better include your own API key. You can refer to the video below to see how it works.

iOS 16 has this feature built-in, so if your iPhone is running iOS 16 or newer versions, you can get this shortcut without using third-party API.

Spotify Playlist to Apple Music

This shortcut is to help you transfer playlist from Spotify to Apple Music. Obviously, you need to have Apple Music subscription for this shortcut to work. When you run it for the first time, you need to log in to Spotify and grant Spotify access. You only need to do this once.

Apple Music playlist to Spotify

Like the previous one, this one is for transferring Apple Music playlist to Spotify. It will work even if you don’t have Apple Music subscription or Spotify Premium.

Shazam to Spotify playlist

If you like the song that you are listening to, you can run this shortcut to add it to any of your Spotify playlist or library. It will bring all your Spotify playlists for you to choose from. You can copy the Spotify Playlist ID and paste it in the shortcut, so every time, it will add Shazam-ed tracks to that playlist directly.

Remove duplicate photos

If you have saved an image or video multiple times, this shortcut can help you identify them and delete the duplicates. However, this cannot be used to delete similar photos. Be sure to open the shortcut to edit the Album that you want to remove duplicates from. To learn more about removing duplicated photos, read this post.

Hide Photos

This shortcut will encode your selected photos with base64, zip them, and save the files to the Hidden folder in your iCloud. After that, it will offer you an option to delete the selected photos. You can run this shortcut again to view the hidden images or restore them back to Photos app.

Even if others open the Files app to find the Hidden folder, all they see is just a few lines of code. If you want to protect your private photos with a passcode, you can check other methods for hiding photos on iPhone.

QQ Music Playlist to Apple Music

QQ Music is a popular music streaming service in China. If you use it and Apple Music, you can run this shortcut to transfer your playlist from QQ Music to Apple Music. Be sure to edit the shortcut and change the destination from My Music Library to your preferred Playlist.

Change Spotify Playlist Cover

Find Duplicate Songs

This shortcut will find all duplicate songs in your music library by comparing the artist’s name and title. Then create a new playlist with all the duplicates. Then you can open iTunes on Windows or Music on Mac to delete all duplicates.

Convert FLAC to ALAC [Mac]

Mac offers a built-in terminal function for converting FLAC to ALAC. I made a shortcut to use this feature easily. Once you add this shortcut, you can select a FLAC file or a folder containing FLAC files and then select the shortcut from Quick Actions.

MixCloud Downloader

This is a simple downloader shortcut that allows you to download music from MixCloud. You can also get more music downloader shortcuts from here.

Apple Music Downloader Shortcut

Run a shortcut every X days

I made a shortcut to run any shortcut of your choice every 3 days. You can change it to any number of days. It would be best if you create a daily automation to run this shortcut.

File Converter (API)

Usually, I download ebooks in PDF, so I create this shortcut to convert PDF to EPUB or MOBI. It can convert more files other than PDF by manual input. As its name suggests, it requires an API key. I have left my API key in the shortcut. It can only convert 25 files per day, so it is recommended to get your own API key. Follow the comments in the shortcut to get your own API key.

More Shortcuts I Like

Advanced GIF Maker

You do not need to install an app to create GIF because Shortcuts can do it for you. This shortcut allows you to select a video or a few photos from Camera Roll to make a GIF. You can also edit the shortcut to make the GIF play faster or slower.

Run Tampermonkey Scripts

If you have use the Tampermonkey extension on your PC or Mac to run userscripts, you can also use this shortcut to run some scripts with Safari. Be use you can use it, you should save your scripts in text in the iCloud/Shortcuts/Scripts/ folder.

After testing a dozen userscripts, I found that some work while others don’t. If you are looking for a better experience running userscripts on iPhone, you should use the Userscripts extension for Safari.

Watermark Video

It overlays a watermark on the lower right corner of a video. You need to have either a-Shell or a-Shell mini installed to use this shortcut.
