Ask Siri to Play Spotify Music

The latest version of Spotify actually supports Siri commands in iOS 13. If your iPhone or iPad is running iOS 13 or new version, you can simply ask Siri to play a Spotify playlist or track.

If you ask Siri to play Spotify music a few times, the action will be available in the Shortcuts app. Then you can add Play Spotify Music to your morning shortcut or good night shortcut.

If the Spotify action does not show up, be sure to go to Settings > Siri & Search > Spotify and enable the option “Learn from this app”.

What I like is to create a shortcut to play Spotify music and stop playing in 30 munites by adding a Start Timer action there. You do need to change the Timer settings to Stop Playing When the Timer Ends.

For older versions, you can get the Spotify shortcuts to play Spotify Music using Siri voice command.

Play Spotify Track

Of course, you need to download the Shortcuts app if you haven’t. Then you can follow the steps below to add this shortcut to Siri, so you can use a Siri voice command to run this.

Play Spotify Playlist

The setup of this shortcut is quite simple, with only two actions. You just add a URL action and format it like this below:

spotify://track/trackID?context=spotify:playlist:playlistID

Be sure to replace the track ID and playlist ID with your own. Then add an Open URLs action to open the URL. Viola, it will start to play the Spotify track in your chosen Spotify playlist.

Resume Spotify Music

This shortcut will resume the music that you previously played. It is a little bit complicated because it uses Spotify API to get the song that you played. If you have the Spotify Playlist to Apple Music shortcut, then this should be easy for you.

First, you need to sign up as Spotify Developer.

Second, create an application and fill it in with the required information.

Third, Copy your Spotify Client ID and Client Secret.

Fourth, use this shortcut to get Spotify Refresh Token, which will automatically be copied to the clipboard. You need to enter your Client ID and Client Secret in the shortcut before you run.

Fifth, enter the Spotify Refresh Token in this shortcut Play Spotify. Also, paste your Client ID and Client Secret in the shortcut.

That’s almost of all the setup and then you can add this shortcut to Siri and ask Siri to resume your Spotify music. This shortcut also allows you to specify a device to play Spotify music. For example, if you want to resume music on Alexa Echo speaker, you just enter the Device ID in the shortcut.

Play a Spotify Playlist

This shortcut Play a Spotify Playlist will play a random playlist from your Spotify Library. You can modify the shortcut to play a certain playlist. This shortcut will only pull public and owned playlists. So if you follow a playlist, it won’t appear on the list.

To set it up, you can either enter your Spotify playlist URL or Spotify User ID. If you enter your playlist URL, it will play a random song in that playlist. If you leave it blank, it plays a random playlist in your library. If you want to customize the shortcut, you can refer to the video below:

Conclusion

That’s how you can use Shortcuts to play Spotify Music. As mentioned, you can add all these shortcuts to Siri so you can use the Siri voice command to play a Spotify playlist, album, or specific track. Shortcuts can be very powerful. Some people even use it to download Spotify music to MP3

  1. To test it, you can go to the Spotify Developer Console, select Get the Current User’s Recently Played Tracks, and then Get OAuth Token. Then delete Run Spotify Refresh Token action and replace it with the OAuth Token. If this works, it is a problem of the Spotify Refresh Token.
I heard that the latest Spotify app supports Siri natively, so this shortcut may be meaningless. I haven’t tried it because I mainly use Android. I will update this post when I tested it out.

  2. Hi,

Regarding the Resume Spotify Music shortcut, could it be that the shortcut “Spotify Refresh Token” no longer workS in iOS 13? The Spotify Refresh Token shortcut does not return a value, and I’m pretty confident I followed the described steps correctly.

Also, the “Choose a Spotify Playlist” works fine for me but it doesn’t start to automatically play the selected playlist. It should right? Is it also possible to have it automatically shuffle play the list?

    Thanks for the great work!
